Administrative investigation has revealed embezzlement of Rs 10.77 crore in Jamia Urdu Institute. Between 1998 and 2017, staff educational and personal loans were distributed against the rules and fraud was also committed in many other items. The DM has summoned the investigation report and preparations are on to issue a notice to the institute.
Like madrassas, Urdu is taught in Jamia Urdu Educational Institute. The organization is registered as a society and was established in the year 1939 for the promotion of Urdu language as a self-sustaining society. In this regard, a complaint was made to the administration about making wrong payments and giving loans to the staff in an irregular manner. When it was jointly investigated by the officials of Administrative and Accounts Department, it came to light that an amount of Rs 10.77 crore was given as loan to 11 people in an illegal manner. As per rules this cannot be done. It was also not recovered. Some other financial irregularities have also come to light in the investigation. In the investigation of the Accounts Department, this has been found to be in the category of embezzlement.
According to complainant and former member Usman Khan, the primary work of the institution has been to spread education through correspondence in various recognized courses through Urdu medium to all parts of India. However, due to the decreasing recognition of Urdu language courses and the decrease in public interest in Urdu language, the institution has also started teaching courses like BA, BSc, BEd etc. But its expansion has decreased at present as compared to earlier.
The institution is financed entirely from the various fees collected from students. The organization had opened about 18 accounts. Today only 08 accounts are operational with the institution. The Income Tax Department used to freeze the bank accounts of the institution, due to which the institution faced problems in receiving demand drafts from students from far away places.
